  • mechanical treatment

Through the anaerobic digestion and advanced thermal treatment technologies, around 5.8MW of electricity will be exported to the National Grid per year - enough to power the equivalent of 11,000 homes.

How we recycle your food waste

We use process called Anaerobic Digestion (AD).

This process uses microorganisms to break down the food waste in an enclosed system, The absence of oxygen helps to break down the food waste.

The result is methane coming off which is collected and converted into biogas. Biogas is used to generate electricity or heat. The AD process also creates a nutrient-rich material which is used as a fertiliser for land regeneration.

Trade waste

Small scale traders can recycle certain types of waste or dispose of general waste at selected household waste recycling centres. Find out more about trade waste.

Business waste and the law

You:

  • cannot dump waste at the household tip or in household bins
  • must use a licensed contractor to get rid of your waste properly and safely
  • have a duty of care to keep your waste stored securely

Duty of care

Under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, all businesses have a duty of care for the disposal of all their recyclable materials and commercial waste.

Business rates do not cover businesses for any recycling or waste collections, you are therefore responsible for the management of all the waste that your business produces.

To find out more about your duty of care, visit Gov.UK.
