Council tax charges

Heading

Following an issue earlier this week with council tax payments via direct debit in the former South Northamptonshire area, we have investigated and discovered this was due to an administrative error on our part.

Anyone for whom this has caused financial or bank issues should call us on 0300 126 7000 selecting options 2, 3, 2 and 1 to reach the dedicated customer service team for the South Northamptonshire area

How we work out your bill

The amount you have to pay depends on which of the eight council tax bands your home is in from A through to H and the area you live.

There was an issue fetching the parish data. Please try again later.

A government body called the Valuation Office Agency decides which band your property is in. Most of the money we will collect will be spent on local council services.

However, we collect some of it for other organisations to pay for services that will benefit the whole of West Northamptonshire such as Police and Fire Services. We also collect money on behalf of town and parish councils where this applies. This will be shown on your bill.

Example breakdown for council tax band D:

  • West Northamptonshire Council: £1,402.89
  • Adult Social Care Precept: £159.19
  • West Northamptonshire Council: Special Expenses: £4.31
  • Parish Average: £77.38
  • Police: £268.04
  • Fire: £63.20
  • Total: £1,975.01

Please note, band D is the amount for the average council tax payer. Town and Parish Councils may levy a separate amount called a precept that may form part of your council tax bill.

Why information is on a different website
We are in the process of adding information to this new unitary council website. Some pages will give you a link back to a previous council website to help you find what you need. Read more about the council changes.
