Garden waste

Garden waste collection is an optional, chargeable collection service for all households in West Northamptonshire.

The subscription service was already in place for homes in the Daventry and Northampton areas, but was introduced in the former South Northants area from 4 April 2022.

How to subscribe

The annual subscription charge for the fortnightly service from April 2022 to March 2023 is £42 per bin and can be paid online via debit or credit card.

If you were previously subscribed in Northampton or Daventry areas and wish to continue receiving garden waste collections for the next year then you will need to renew.

What happens next

After you subscribe, you will receive a registration letter with a sticker that must be placed on the front of your garden waste bin. Bins that do not show a valid registration sticker will not be emptied.

If you subscribe to the service then you will continue using your existing garden waste bin for collections. We do not supply garden waste bins in smaller sizes.

You can have a new bin if:

  • your bin is lost or is badly damaged or broken beyond repair and needs replacing
  • you are subscribing for an extra bin subscription
  • you are subscribing for the first time and do not currently have a garden waste bin

What to put in your garden waste bin

  • cut flowers
  • grass cuttings
  • hedge trimmings
  • leaves and twigs
  • pet straw
  • small branches
  • untreated sawdust
  • weeds
  • wood shavings

What not to put in your garden waste bin

  • bricks, rubble and soil
  • large tree branches or trunks
  • cardboard and paper
  • cat or dog waste
  • fats and oils
  • food
  • flower pots
  • plastic bags
  • any plastic item
  • textiles
  • metals and glass
  • other wooden items

Bins that have the wrong items or are too heavy to lift onto the waste vehicle will not be collected.

People who do not wish to use the garden waste service may wish to consider home composting. Find out more on the Get Composting website.

You can also take their garden waste to your local household waste recycling centre.

Moving out of West Northamptonshire

You can transfer the service to a new address if you are moving within the West Northants area. The bin needs to remain at your old property. Please contact us and we will cancel your subscription at your old address and re-issue a permit sticker for your new address.

As there are no refunds for this service, you can leave your bins and sticker for the people moving into the property to use until the end of the service period, when they will need to pay for another if they want the service to continue.
